Identifying and nurturing talent in a global firm with disparate HR systems

Established as a traditional family business in 1997, Gestamp Servicios S.A. is growing fast. A specialist in metal automotive components that help build safer and lighter vehicles, Gestamp has acquired 200 companies in the past 10 years in its quest to become the most renowned supplier in the automotive industry.

 

The industry itself is also evolving as drivers migrate to electric vehicles, and Gestamp needs experienced and engaged employees with the design and engineering skills to adapt to this change. However, with multiple on-premise HR systems and decentralized decision-making, managing and accessing data on 45,000 employees across 100 sites was difficult. Gestamp needed better visibility on employees’ performance, experience, skills, languages, challenges, and compensation to aid performance development and workforce planning.

 

The company also faced the challenge of providing HR systems in 17 languages across 21 countries and complying with country-specific labor laws and regulations. For example, with many of its employees based in factories, Gestamp must carefully track hours worked to comply with time and workforce management regulations.

 

Gestamp sought a standardized, modern solution to help it smartly manage employee data. And, given the level of complexity in its business, it needed to implement and scale any new solution smoothly with minimal customization.

Making standardized employee data accessible across the company

A longtime SAP customer, Gestamp used the on-premise SAP ERP Human Capital Management solution for its core employee data, including its payroll and time management capabilities. It had already begun an HR transformation based on the SAP SuccessFactors Onboarding, SAP SuccessFactors Recruiting, SAP SuccessFactors Succession & Development, and SAP SuccessFactors Performance & Goals solutions.

 

To fuel its talent management aspirations and enable more-informed talent planning, Gestamp knew the next step was to integrate these solutions with its employee data. Harmonizing company-wide employee data in the SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central solution to create a single source of truth would have far-reaching benefits, from an improved employee experience to increased transparency and reporting capabilities.

 

Gestamp decided to deploy SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central across the entire company in a big-bang, nine-month project. It worked with implementation partner NTT DATA in a truly collaborative partnership that helped ensure the project was completed on time.

Powering better people decisions with a single source of talent data

Thanks to SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central, Gestamp’s entire business, not just HR, now has access to one global system of record for employee data. Management can quickly consult more-detailed organizational charts and gain a comprehensive view of employees’ locations, skills, and performance. Recognizing the potential of this data, managers are collaborating with HR to discuss what additional information they need to help attract and retain the most talented people.

 

Gestamp can expand its talent search to include personal and job data. In addition, when an employee changes manager or location, new forms are automatically created. This expanded functionality combines to provide a better experience for managers, HR teams, and employees.

 

On the reporting side, managers can create reports that span both talent management solutions and SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central, giving them greater insights for decision-making and planning.

 

Gestamp is also using the time-off and time-sheet capabilities within SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central for office-based and salaried employees. Now, this critical information feeds automatically into the payroll system, increasing efficiency and accuracy compared with the old processes based on e-mails and spreadsheets.

 

Meanwhile, embedded localization capabilities that go beyond simple language translation help Gestamp decrease risk and more efficiently satisfy regulatory requirements in 21 countries while reducing the manual burden on legal and compliance teams.

 

And being able to nimbly deploy and adjust HR software means Gestamp is better prepared for growth and change, whatever form that may take.

Building a comprehensive, connected, and global HR system

When it has finished deploying the SAP SuccessFactors Compensation solution, now being rolled out, Gestamp plans to implement the SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Payroll solution to further realize the value of a truly integrated HR platform.

 

To help ensure compliance with local labor laws, Gestamp is deploying the SAP SuccessFactors Time Tracking solution, initially in the United States, to enable advanced time tracking for shift-based manufacturing workers. This solution is designed to provide employees with simplified and intuitive role-specific time entry, more-accurate and timely payments with a clear overview of labor costs, and transparent time evaluation and approval workflows. The company plans to extend it to countries using the time-off and time-sheet features.

 

Gestamp is also looking at how it can best use the SAP SuccessFactors Learning solution to complement its talent management initiatives and enable a culture of continuous learning that helps prepare employees for an innovative future.
